Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Henry Quissa (First Nations Canadian, Inuit, b. 1948) Soapstone Bird, ca. late 20th century CE. A marvelous soapstone carving of a bird perched on a rock - the webbed feet suggest some type of water fowl. The underside is signed "HENRY QUISSA / POV / 1955." Pov was a name sometimes assigned to Inuit people living near Puvirnituq in northern Quebec. The number might be a year, but similar carvings attributed to a Henry Qullialu Quissa note he was born in 1948, which suggests that it is not a year but possibly a record number. Size: 12.75" L x 4" W x 9.75" H (32.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 24.8 cm)
