New World, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 20th century CE. A gorgeous poi bowl showing attractive patina and graining, hand-carved from milo wood by the famous Hawaiian wood-turner Pat Coito. The vessel has a flat base, a rounded body, and walls that taper gradually to a thin rim and a deep interior cavity. The bowl displays the natural color of its wood grain in hues of toffee, caramel, and wheat, and has been polished to a lustrous sheen. The pyro-etched signature of the maker on the base reads "Pat Coito, Honokaa, Hawaii, 7-99-46, milo," with the numbers being a dating code - seventh month of 1999, item #46. Size: 3.25" W x 2.7" H (8.3 cm x 6.9 cm).
