Description:

Harold Frank (American born in England, 1921-1995). "Spatial Scenic" painting/mixed media on board, n.d. Artist signature in lower right corner. A fine painting entitled "Spatial Scenic" by Harold Frank, depicting an Abstract-Expressionist inspired rendering of a picturesque (perhaps Midwestern) landscape, divided by jagged linear planes as whisps of clouds or smoke rise into the sky at the background. Splashes of color diversify the terrain with areas of emerald, forest green, navy, baby blue, and violet embellishing the dark olive green field, as a horizontal streak of blush pink separates the land from the mottled blue and white of the sky. Size of painting: 7.7" W x 6.9" H (19.6 cm x 17.5 cm) Size of frame: 17.9" W x 21.9" H (45.5 cm x 55.6 cm)

Frank immigrated with his family to the US through Ellis Island. Growing up in the tenements of the Lower East Side in New York City during the era of the Great Depression and World War II, Frank found Abstract Expressionism to be the ideal means to explore the angst of his world.

Harold Frank studied art at the Art Students League in New York, the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, Chouinard Art Institute, and UCLA where he was a colleague of Richard Diebenkorn (American, 1922-1993), an artist who is oftentimes associated with Abstract Expressionism as well as a pioneer of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. In addition to Diebenkorn, Frank's influences include DeKooning, Picasso, Matisse, and Rouault. He once stated, "I can live with the abstract. Life is a mystery."
