Description:

Giuseppe Napoli (American, 1929-1967). "Natura Morta" oil on wood panel, 1956 (September). Signature, title, and date are handwritten on the verso. A beautiful painting by Giuseppe Napoli depicting a still life comprised of an ensemble of bottles and storage vessels through his modernist lens. Napoli explored both expressionistic representational and completely non-representational art. While this composition is certainly figurative and references objects in the real world, a close look at the jars, bottles, flasks, and carafes of this composition points to Napoli's sophisticated pursuit of nonrepresentational art. Gestural brushstrokes along with thick impasto and luscious skeins of paint suggest Napoli's experimentation with Abstract Expressionism. A very special piece by mid-century, New York School modernist Giuseppe Napoli rendered in an arresting palette - shades of teal, aqua, celadon, yellow ochre, olive green, mauve, peach, and sienna against a creamy beige and gold background. Size: 21" L x 36.25" W (53.3 cm x 92.1 cm)

Giuseppe Napoli lived and worked in Greenwich Village during the 1950s and 1960s. He was an immensely talented contributor to the New York School. His oeuvre demonstrated innovative exploration of Modernist Representational style as well as Abstract Expressionism. Sadly, Napoli suffered from depression, and despite being featured in solo and group exhibitions, the artist had a difficult time sustaining his career. Tragically, his life was cut short by suicide in 1967.

  • Condition: Signature, title, and date are handwritten on the verso. Some age wear with chips and areas of cracquelure. Napoli painted "Natura Morta" on a piece of salvaged wood as was his practice. As such, the panel itself has losses and imperfections beneath the painted composition. Stains on the verso do not impact the painted composition. Fit with a suspension wire.
