Gay Patterson (American, 1948-2019). "Copper Vessel" oil on canvas, n.d. Signature at upper right. A beautiful painting depicting an attractive young lady holding a voluminous copper vessel by Santa Fe artist Gay Patterson. The woman gazes out from the canvas, her visage comprised of ice blue eyes framed by arched brows leading to an aquiline nose, slightly parted rosy lips, a strong jawline, and a peaches-and-cream complexion, all framed by a centrally-parted coiffure of long ginger locks that complement the copper hues of the vessel that she holds. Akin to an otherworldly maiden who seems to reside in a fairy tale, this lovely lady recalls the feminine archetype of Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais. Size (painting): 32" L x 17" W (81.3 cm x 43.2 cm) Size (frame): 35.1" L x 20" W (89.2 cm x 50.8 cm)

Gay Patterson passed away on June 12, 2019 from complications related to a squamous cell carcinoma. Her artist's statement provides precious insight to her work. The following is a poignant excerpt: "Over decades, I seem to have embedded notions of ephemerality, motion and the constant of change in my work. I'm not sure if I'm trying to understand mutability, nail it down or accept it, but it is a primal state of life, and so very beautiful. What you see, feel and think depends on just how you approach everything, including art. In looking at a painting, no part exists in isolation but alters in relationship to what it is next to, where it is viewed from, what the quality of light is and every experience you bring along."
