B. Tarbutton (American, 20th century). "Wickenburg" oil on canvas, ca. 1900. A captivating folk art painting of Wickenburg - Arizona's westernmost town which was established in 1863. Located just below Arizona's mountainous country, on the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert, Wickenburg boasts rich natural beauty - scenic desert lands with saguaros as well as farmlands flanking the Hassayampa River. This painting presents rows of farmhouses, a pair of silos, as well as a church along the banks of the Hassayampa River where the flood plain provided ideal conditions for agriculture and ranching. Blue ridge mountains are visible in the distance, all below balmy skies of blue with wispy clouds. Turbutton's folk art style is charmingly descriptive, delineating detail upon detail of this Western town. Size of painting: 11.875" L x 17.375" W (30.2 cm x 44.1 cm) Size of frame: 17" L x 22" W (43.2 cm x 55.9 cm)

A bit of history about Wickenburg: Prior to pioneer settlements, this land was home to the Tolkapaya (also Yavapai) people. They called this place "Haseyamo" meaning "following the water as far as it goes," and "Haseyamo" was the root of the name Hassayampa. By the early 1820s, trappers in search of beavers along the Hassayampa River spread the word about this region, and Wickenberg as well as other regions of the West became part of the U.S. following the Mexican American War of 1848. Gold prospectors - including Henry Wickenburg for whom the town was named - also explored this land during the 1860s, while ranchers and farmers accompanied the miners as well.
