Jose Luis Cuevas (Mexican, 1934-2017), lithograph entitled, "This, However Was My First Contact With Insanity . . . " from "Recollections of Childhood," 1962. Signed in pencil on lower right on one side. A double-sided lithograph of this nightmarish scene by Jose Luis Cuevas who was a Mexican artist affiliated with the post-World War II movement known as the Generacion de la Ruptura (translates as Breakaway Generation). The same image is printed on two sides. This typically is a state proof or proof on one side, and a signed proof on the otherto save paper, or to use the two proofs commercially after seeing the quality of the image from the stone. Members of the Generacion de la Ruptura (Breakaway Generation) were of the opinion that Mexican art had become too mainstream. They opposed popular Mexican muralists, especially Los Tres Grandes - Diego Rivera, Jose Clement Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros - who they believed were preventing artistic development in Mexico by being too deferential to the Mexican government.
At age 10, Jose Luis Cuevas studied at the National School of Painting and Sculpture. Over time he came to be known for his unique expressionist style and a penchant for depicting disfigured portraits and disproportionate figures. In 1982, Cuevas represented Mexico at the Venice Biennale. He also created a museum dedicated to himself in an old monastery which opened in 1992. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
Examples of this lithograph have been collected by various museums including the Brooklyn Museum, New York and the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas.
