Rookwood Pottery Vase by Charles Stewart Todd (1886-1950) dated 1917. Signed, numbered, and dated on base. A beautiful carved, matte glazed ceramic vase decorated with a leaf and berry motif and embellished in shades of cerulean blue and plum. The vessel is marked on the base with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), "XVII" to indicate the date 1917, identifying shape number "904 CC", and a "CST" (Charles Stewart Todd) artist's mark. The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists. Born in Owensburg, Kentucky, Charles Stewart Todd studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy in addition to other venues in New York and Europe. He worked at Rookwood from 1910 until 1922 and is beloved for his abstract, organic designs that reflect the tenets of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Old Butterfield & Butterfield label on base. A few scuffs to the exterior. Slight remains of museum putty on base. Otherwise intact and very nice.
