Carl Dahl (active XX-XXI). "White Bird" porcelain and iron on wood base, 2014. Signed and dated on underside of the wood base. A beautiful sculpture by southwestern sculptor Carl Dahl, depicting a soaring white bird with his signature classical aesthetic. Dahl intentionally creates figures that are white and appear to be fragmentary, akin to the remains of ancient sculptures, suggesting age and history. Dahl describes them as "bleached" and "bone-like" reflecting not only the Classical World but also his personal experience of the severe desert landscape where he was raised. In addition to being a brilliant sculptor, Carl Dahl is impressively eloquent when he describes his art, inspirations, and process as evident in the following statement, "In sculpture, I prefer to work on an intimate scale. This immediacy lets me work fast and with simple tools. My materials are moist clay, steel wire, time and heat. The emerging clay figures bleached, bone-like and suffused with rusting iron capture elemental parts of my desert experience. The wood bases reflect an instance of life grounding this entropy."
