Description:

Carl Dahl (American, active XX-XXI). Mixed media on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right. An elegant mixed media (paint and pencil) rendering of a horse standing in profile by Carl Dahl. Dahl is best known for his sculptures of horses, and this piece shares certain qualities with his equine sculptures. Dahl intentionally creates renderings that are white porcelain and bronze and appear to be fragmentary, akin to the remains of ancient sculptures, suggesting age and history. Dahl describes them as "bleached" and "bone-like" reflecting not only the Classical World but also his personal experience of the severe desert landscape where he was raised. This mixed media piece, delineated in brown paint and pencil while also capturing the white negative space, is likely a two-dimensional rendering of or study for one of Dahl's horse sculptures. Size (sight view): 13.4" L x 17.9" W (34 cm x 45.5 cm) Size (frame): 22.5" L x 27" W (57.2 cm x 68.6 cm)

Horses are favorite subjects of Carl Dahl's, and he has received international recognition for his horse sculptures. About horses, he states, "In horses, I find beauty, power and freedom; their legs, that seemed overly long to me as a child, rise to complete the perfect form. They remain one of life's great joys. There is nothing I would rather smell than a horse's neck - no greater feeling than sitting a horse. They recall the boy in me and have made me a better man."
