Description:

William E. Freeman - also known as Bill Freeman (American, 1927-2012). "Cliffs Along the Hoback" - oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. Signed in black on lower right. A beautiful view of the rocky cliffs along the Hoback River; formerly called the Fall River, it is a 55 mile tributary of Wyoming's Snake River. At the center of this landscape may in fact be Granite Creek streaming through the wilderness. Freeman captures the peace as well as the power of Mother Nature with this composition, and the palette is remarkable - just look at those pink mountainsides which contrast beautifully with the verdant evergreens which in turn are accented by a few citrine and golden orange deciduous trees and the turquoise and white waters of the creek. All is delineated via Freeman's sophisticated impasto and brushwork techniques and set in a gorgeous custom frame. Size: 23.75" W x 19.625" H (60.3 cm x 49.8 cm); (frame): 33" W x 29.125" H (83.8 cm x 74 cm)

Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of 30 that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
