A large scale painting by Popovi Da (also known as Tony Martinez and Antonio Jose Martinez) inspired by his native San Ildefonso culture. The composition features a bow hunter leading his horse along a stream as the orb-like sun is about to set in the distance. The horse is carrying a hog-tied deer on his back. Regional flora and fauna surround them - and all is delineated in a tranquil palette of aqua, russet, and rose with black and white contours and highlights. A stunning work by Popovi Da set in a custom frame. Size of painting: 19.375" L x 25" W (49.2 cm x 63.5 cm) Size of frame: 30" L x 35" W (76.2 cm x 88.9 cm)

Popovi Da was a San Ildefonso potter and painter. Son of the famous Tewa potter, Maria Martinez, Popovi Da (also known as Tony Martinez) worked in collaboration with his mother in addition to being an independent potter and painter. An important member of the San Ildefonso community, Popovi Da owned an arts and crafts shop in his pueblo and served as governor six times beginning in 1952.

  • Condition: Signed by the artist on the lower right. Artwork is set in a custom frame behind glass and has not been examined outside the frame. Frame shows normal age wear with scuffs/abrasions and chips. There is a small repair with slight separation to the upper right mitered corner. Otherwise the artwork is very nice, fitted with suspension wire, and ready to display.
