Native American, Southwestern USA, Arizona or New Mexico, Hopi Peoples, ca. mid-20th to early 21st century CE. "White Bear" by Gary or Godfrey Hayah (Hopi, unknown dates). Painted Wood. Inscribed "White / Bear / By: / G. Hayah" on base. A dramatic wood kachina doll depicting White Bear, stepping forward with arms raised and claws outstretched as he turns his head skyward as though letting out a fierce growl. Vibrantly hand-painted, the elaborate figure wears a furry bear's head mask and bear claw gloves, while his gray body is dressed in a loincloth with high socks and shoes. Strips of leather further adorn the arms, legs, chest, and back of the figure. Size: 7.1" W x 12.7" H (18 cm x 32.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
