Description:

Native American, Southwestern USA, Arizona or New Mexico, Hopi Peoples, ca. 20th century CE. "Takursh Mana" by Emory or Emery Pohuma (Hopi, 1917 to 1999). Painted wood. Inscribed "Takursh / Mana" on underside of right foot and "E. Pohuma" on left. Wearing black string tied to each wrist, the maiden faces forwards, holding out instruments for creating multitoned sounds: a hollowed-out gourd with a notched stick in her left hand and a spatula in her right. A helmet-like headdress capped by liberal remains of white feathers crowns her head, framing her simple visage which displays only rectangular eyes. Her body is covered by a knee-length robe with a decorative belt at the waist and sizeable, white boots. Size (without cape): 5.4" W x 14.2" H (13.7 cm x 36.1 cm); (with cape): 8.8" W (22.4 cm)
