Maria Montoy Poveka Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1887-1980). Blackware jar, ca. 1920 to 1925 CE. Signed "Marie" on underside of base. A minimalist yet elegant blackware jar by famed potter Maria Martinez. Sitting upon a narrow base, the apple-form jar presents a broad, rounded shoulder and an inward-curving rim, all enveloped in lustrous black glaze. Over the course of her long career Martinez's signature varied, but her earliest signed pieces were often just marked as "Marie" (with an "E") from about 1920 to 1925. Her husband, Julian, helped paint these pieces, but their names only began to appear together on pottery around 1925 until his death in 1943. She then used her true name "Maria" (with an "A") to sign subsequent pieces. Size: 6.4" Diameter x 4.2" H (16.3 cm x 10.7 cm)
The San Ildefonso Pueblo is synonymous with the pottery of Maria Martinez. Her signature style became so popular that its sales actually helped stabilize the isolated, drought ridden, over-logged, and influenza-ridden pueblo and many of the surrounding pueblos as well.

- Condition: Signed "Marie" on underside of base. Stable hairline fissure or heavy scratch to rim, and some nicks and abrasions to surface. Otherwise, intact and excellent with lustrous glaze.
