Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A charming, mold-formed drinking vessel of a tapering conical form with a depiction of a parrot riding a frog. The avian figure has an aquiline beak, circular eyes, and a stocky neck, and the frog is defined by a wide, thin mouth, a stippled body, and retracted legs. A whistle is integral with the head of the parrot and the mouthpiece is the drinking vessel itself, and produces a high-pitched sound when used. Covered in a matte orange slip, this is an amusing example of Sican/Lambayeque pottery! Size: 8" L x 3.25" W x 7.5" H (20.3 cm x 8.3 cm x 19 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
