Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A delightful, catamaran-shaped, blackware stirrup vessel, with the body of the vessel formed by two hollow fish bodies connected by a tube-like support. A thick strap handle arches over their center, a tall, tapered spout rising from one end, while a pelican-like bird figure supports the other. Most of what we know about Sican comes from a large area called the Batan Grande Archaeological Complex, a huge ceremonial and cemetery site for a little-understood ancient civilization. With pyramids rising over 40 m high and thousands of tombs, the area represents a lengthy period of occupation. Nearly every tomb contained a variety of ceramic vessels like this one. Size: 6.9" L x 7.3" W x 6.75" H (17.5 cm x 18.5 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
