Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A hand-built terracotta llama or other camelid (alpaca, vicuna) effigy vessel, the body elongated and round-bottomed, the legs in relief against the lower body. The head and spout of the vessel rise from opposite ends of the body, with a strap-like bridge handle between them. A large load is slung across the animal's back and red lines highlight the handle, spout, and what looks like reins and a blanket. The llama was the largest domesticated animal in ancient Peru. In addition to serving as beasts of burden, llamas provided Peruvians with wool and food. They also served as sacrificial animals in religious ceremonies. Size: 8" W x 7.7" H (20.3 cm x 19.6 cm)
