Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Lambayeque Valley, Sican-Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1375 CE. A fabulous stirrup-handled vessel with a slender, conical spout on either side of the globular body and a conical foot, with all components formed from hammered copper sheets which are soldered together. A pair of small jaguar figures stand in mirrored poses on either side of the shoulder, and a pair of abstract heads - each with a projecting ear and tongue - at the base of each spout. The heads are abstract representations of Naylamp (also Naymlap, Nanlap, or Nylamp), the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty who came from the south by sea and colonized the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. The handle boasts two panels with six tab-shaped projections each, and a central, janiform head with an eye-adorned headdress and enormous ear discs. A fine example covered in fine layers of green and russet patina. Size: 12.75" W x 15" H (32.4 cm x 38.1 cm).
