Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A magnificent textile comprised of woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers and depicting a pair of crowned condors circumscribed by bands of rose red and pink. Each condor stands in composite profile, wears an elaborate headdresses, and is surrounded by birds and serpents. These powerful birds served as a royal emblem, symbolically referencing the lords of the sky. What's more, in the Pre-Columbian world, the condor's soaring flight patterns made it an ideal metaphor for the sun. In addition, its speed, visual acuity, and powerful talons were models for the successful hunter and warrior. Able to fly to impressive heights, condors could make dynamic dives to pursue their prey.
