Description:

**Originally Listed At $550**

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. An undeniably charming fellow, a flat disc pendant in the form of a fox, his body curled around himself, his long, bushy tail touching his mouth. A tiny perforation near the forehead serves as a method for fastening this pendant to something, probably a tunic. The surface has no visible details (perhaps there never were any, or they are obscured by patina), but the shape is enough to give us an idea of the animal. Foxes were trickster figures in the ancient Americas, similar to the coyote; in the Andes, the Moche depict fox hunts as well as show humans with fox heads, an indication of elite or shamanic status. Wearing this pendant would have signaled that status. Size: 3.2" W x 3.5" H (8.1 cm x 8.9 cm); 4.1" H (10.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Hirsch collection, Germany
