Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 1000 to 1350 CE. A striking hand-built blackware pottery vessel on a corseted foot bearing a register of impressed stepped and triangular motifs. The globular body boasts a pair of applied, stylized jaguars on the shoulder, and a wide strap handle arches along the verso with a man's head in a tumi shaped headdress. The conical spout displays the head of Nylamp (also Naylamp, Nanlap, or Naymlap), the legendary hero founder of the Lambayeque and god of the underworld. Nylamp forms the spout base and is shown with large earspools that dangle to this chest, spiked headdress brim, and very stern facial features and scarification or tattoos incised into his cheeks. A fascinating depiction of this figure with jaguar companions or protectors! Size: 6.5" Diameter x 10" H (16.5 cm x 25.4 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
