Description:

United States, Native American, American Midwest and Southeast, Mississippian, ca. 11th to 14th century CE. A wonderful piriform bottle, hand-built from earthenware and enveloped in a rich hue of gray. Sitting upon a curved base, the lovely vessel displays a globular body, a rounded shoulder, and an elongated neck that gently tapers to a circular rim. The makers of these bottles discovered that if they added ground mussel shells the pottery would shrink less during the firing process. If you look closely at the fabric of this jar you can see small white specks which are indeed the ground shells. On the base is an old label that states this was found on the "Munn Plantation" in St. Francis County, Arkansas, Aug 4, 1933. Size: 7" W x 8" H (17.8 cm x 20.3 cm)
