Description:

Santa Fe Railways original calendar with colored lithograph card from a painting by E. Irving Couse (American, 1866-1936), ca. 1930 CE. An original Santa Fe Railroad advertising calendar featuring a card entitled, '"The Katcina Doll" in the Indian-detour Country,' from a painting by E. Irving Couse, a founding member and the first president of the Taos Society of Artists who is best known for his paintings of Native Americans and the American Southwest, attached to its original date pad, published by the American Lithographic Co, Inc. N.Y. USA, copyright 1929 by W. J. Black. Not only does this calendar include fine artwork depicting a Hopi indian in native dress who holds a lovely Katsina doll with additional Hopi creations included below in the composition ( a piece of pottery and another figural work), it also includes the actual 1930 calendar pages. Most of its monthly pages present enticing messages, tempting potential travelers to Go West. February, for example, reads, "They are playing golf in the sunshine of Southern Arizona and California." The May page reads, "Santa Fe is the cool summer way to Far West scenic regions. Summer Xcursions begin this month." July reads, "On your way see Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona Rockies." A wonderful historic calendar featuring a superb lithograph of Couse's work with the Santa Fe Railway logo in the upper corner, a lengthy description of the artist's work along with a map of the railroad on the verso of the card. Size: art litho card measures 13.5" W x 13" H (34.3 cm x 33 cm); calendar pages measure 13.5" W x 8" H (34.3 cm x 20.3 cm)
