Pre-Columbian, Central Highlands, Guatemala, Kaminaljuyu, ca. 500 BCE to 1000 CE. A wonderful ensemble of Mayan ceramic heads with expressive visages and intricate detailing from Kaminaljuyu, Guatemala. Notable anthropologist and archaeologist Michael Coe has described Kaminaljuyú as one of the greatest of all archaeological sites in the New World. In ancient times known as Tulam Tzu, it was a large ceremonial Maya site, with the longest occupation of any American archeological site (1500 BCE to 1200 CE) located in the Central highlands of Guatemala (modern day Guatemala City). It developed a rich sculptural tradition with wondrous monumental stela. Size: shadow box measures 14-3/8" x 11-3/8" x 3-5/8" (36.5 x 28.9 x 9.2 cm); largest head measures 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" (6.4 x 3.8 cm)
