West Africa, Ghana, Ashanti (Asante), ca. early to mid-20th century CE; Burkina Faso, Dogon or Lobi, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful collection of 6 brass rings and weight and 1 copper ring, each cast with an elaborate zoomorphic or figurative finial. The first and darker toned ring is a Dogon copper, with a large pyramidal spike on the shank. The rest are brass Ashanti made rings and a weigh- the weight is for gold measurements and consists of a thick ring with 3 birds perched on the top. The rings include a man playing a drum atop a large shank, and a flattened band with a textured nodule face. The rest are decorated with birds- 2 are Sankofa birds which have their heads turned to look backwards. Traditional rings were made via the traditional lost-wax process, and then forged to add the decoration. Rings were symbols of status, power, and prestige but also held great symbolism and sometimes represented proverbs. Please see extended description below for information on ring sizes.
