Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A sensitively modeled head of a male youth depicted with short curly hair clustered around his face, generously-lidded eyes, a smiling mouth, and full cheeks. The close-cropped hair, classicizing features, and treatment of the eyes suggest that the head is from the Julio-Claudian Period. The cherubic appearance of the child suggests he may have been intended as a depiction of Cupid - Greek Eros - the Roman god of erotic love and desire. Size: 4.3" W x 5.4" H (10.9 cm x 13.7 cm); 6.9" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Berkeley, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s
