Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1000 to 800 BCE. This piece manifests several characteristics of the Olmec baby face figure. Note the elongated head, puffy jowls, upturned jaguar mouth, and slanted eyes. Most intriguing perhaps are the braids cascading over the back shoulders. Recent scholarship has revealed evidence of an African presence in Pre-Columbian America. At the infamous Olmec sites of La Venta and San Lorenzo several colossal heads have revealed faces that clearly display a fusion of African and native Pre-Columbian American races. Evidence put forth from plant geography, skeletons, linguistics, and terracotta figures such as this example seem to confirm this connection. 4-1/4"T x 3-1/4"W x 3-1/2"D Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970 All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
