Description:

Western Asia, Scythian, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A striking silver applique featuring a four-sided, interlocking knot decorated in repousse and with delicate openwork surrounding its center. The ancient Scythians left behind a tremendous body of beautiful precious metalwork, nearly all of it found in tombs called kurgans that dot the landscape from the Black Sea to Mongolia. Goldwork pieces probably came from workshops located on the north of the Black Sea, in modern day Ukraine and Russia. This item may have been used to decorate clothing or the ornament that these nomads put on their beloved horses. Size: 2.5" W (6.4 cm); 4.4" H (11.2 cm) on included custom stand. Silver is 74% pure.

Provenance: private Connecticut, USA collection; ex-private collection, North America, 1980 to 1990s
