Description:

Ancient Near East/Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian/Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. A wonderful carved-stone O-type seal bead of Gobl type 35a in a hue of mottled caramel and toffee browns with cream and taupe striations. The face is incised with a stylized eagle whose body faces forward, while the head is turned to its right. The eagle's minimalistic visage exhibits a prominent curved beak and a large ovoid eye. Intricately detailed with a multitude of striations to represent feathers, the strong bird spreads its wings outwards, its sharp talons flanking a long tailfeather that drops below. A dashed border surrounds the avian. Fixed with a horizontal drill hole for suspension, the ancient tool's back is rounded, giving this example a hemispherical form. Size: 0.625" in diameter x 0.875" H (1.6 cm x 2.2 cm); 2.625" H (6.7 cm) on included custom stand.
