Description:

Ancient Near East, Sassanian (also Sasanian, Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. A collection of 4 hand-carved stone seal beads and intaglio, made from orange carnelian and chalcedony. The largest has a cupid-like figure, the next has a hooked cross or abstract foliate motif with a modern putty impression, and the third seal has linear and very abstract markings. The intaglio was for setting in a ring and the face possibly depicting a gryllos of a bull and griffin head. Size of largest: 0.9" Diameter x 0.65" W (2.3 cm x 1.7 cm)

  • Condition: Carnelian seal has a modern putty impression and light mineral deposits in the recessed areas. Chips and nicks to surfaces, larger abrasions to periphery and drill hole on largest seal. Intaglio stone has abrasions and mineral deposits obscuring details of the motif.
