Ancient Near East, Sassanian (Sasanian, Sassanid) Empire, ca. 3rd to 6th century CE. A beautiful cup formed from translucent glass of a deep forest-green hue. The vessel is defined by a small base, a hemispherical body, a deep basin, and a thick rim. The exterior of the body is adorned with dozens of deep-cut facets that imbue the vessel with an elegant presentation evocative of the ancient Near East. Size: 4" W x 3" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm).

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970s-2000s; ex-Stephen Shalom Collection, New York, USA, acquired in 1980s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with light restoration in some areas of loss, and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to base, body, and rim, with micro-bubbling within the glass matrix, and light pitting. Light earthen deposits throughout.
