Description:

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Parthian to Sassanian (Sasanian, Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE. A 2-part bronze mirror consisting of a cast figural handle in the form of a nude standing woman as well as a sheet bronze mirror disc which is inserted above the woman's head. The woman stands with legs together, holding one hand to her hip, and raising the other hand aloft to support the bottom periphery of the mirror. Lustrous gilding is present along areas of the lower periphery and allude to just how opulent this artifact was when first created. Size: 4.4" W x 7.7" H (11.2 cm x 19.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

  • Condition: Repair to figure's right arm and losses to one side of mirror as shown. Encrustations, abrasions, softening to finer details, fading to most gilding, and small chips to figure and mirror. Nice patina throughout, and good remains of gilding along lower periphery.
