Description:

Near East, Sassanian Empire, ca. 500 CE. This is a nice polished piece of brown/ tan banded agate with the base incised with a portrait of a nobleman or king. He wears a full beard and flowing cape with hair band tied at the back. It has been pierced for suspension and would have been used as a stamp for an official seal. This is quite a unique piece, recalling a prominent and influential kingdom that had great influence throughout the Old World after the fall of Rome. Seals bearing animal designs and those of personages of great historical import are all known and quite the enduring symbols. Size: 1" L x .75" W x .75" H (2.5 cm x 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm)
