Description:

Ancient Near East/Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian/Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. A milky grey quartz seal bead with a flat, ovoid face and a domed body. Incised on the flat face is a portrait of a man wearing a large, curved headdress and tunic with v-neck. Behind him is a fire altar, a common symbol of religious devotion found on Sasanian artwork. The style of engraving is known as "scratch", in which the figure is rendered with parallel lines. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); 2.9" H (7.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired before 2004
