Description:

New World, Native American, New Mexico, Santa Clara Pueblo, Melvin Moquino (b. 1966), ca. late 20th century CE. An elegant teardrop shaped black-on-black vessel featuring two gently rising registers which call to mind rolling hillsides, the lower one depicting the serpent deity Avanyu (Awanyu) with an arrow-like tongue, above a beautiful inlaid oval piece of natural sky blue turquoise surrounded by incised rays that dramatically radiate from the contours of the stone. This piece was created by Melvin Moquino who was born in the Santa Clara pueblo in 1966. As a child, he learned the art of pottery from his father, Corn Moquino, and has clearly had no problem following in his father's footsteps. Size: 4.125" in diameter x 4.875" H (10.5 cm x 12.4 cm)

  • Condition: There is a faint 1.5" stable surface fissure on lower section of exterior wall. Turquoise is intact; what looks like a tiny fissure is actually a natural vein in the stone. Signs of an old label on the base, but the signature - "Melvin Moquino Santa Clara" - on the bottom is legible.
