Description:

Southern Italy, Samnite territory, ca. 430 - 300 BCE. This is a section of a naturalistic form fitted frontal cuirass, hammered from a sheet of bronze with chest pectoral demarcations and piercing around the border for attachment. This would have been worn over a chiton, a sewn garment, and represented a lighter, fleeter improvement over the bell-shaped forms used during the Archaic period. We have evidence of how they looked worn from many depictions on pottery. Size: 12.25" L (31.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-NY Collection
