Description:

Sally Nicolaj Philipsen (Danish, 1879-1936). "Dragor" oil on canvas, 1915. Signed at lower left. A lovely painting by Sally Nicolaj Philipsen depicting the Danish seafaring town of Dragor. The dynamic composition shows a street scene with a petite cat to the left and a yellow house in the distance. Philipsen's broad and open brushstrokes and skilled use of light are emblematic of his style upon returning from France in 1910, where he was heavily influenced by Post-Impressionism. Size: 15" W x 17.5" H (38.1 cm x 44.4 cm)

Sally Philipsen was a Danish-born painter who graduated from the Technical Society School with Holger Gronvold and in January 1896 entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied with Frants Henningsen and Otto Bache. He received the Academy Scholarship 1904, Kaufmanns Legat 1906, Nathans Legat 1932 and Benny Claudi-Pedersens Legat 1936. She was on the board of the Danish Association of Painters. Sally Philipsen began as a portrait painter and in her early portraits shows inspiration from Rembrandt, both in composition and coloring. Philipsen's visit to Paris in 1910 introduced her to Impressionism, which left its mark on her art. Philipsen was also an art collector and collected contemporary Danish art, including works by Fridolin Johansen, Albert Gottschalk and Theodor Philipsen, as well as French works, African sculptures and Chinese antiques.
