Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Salinar culture, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A striking ceramic stirrup vessel with a round body with flattened base, a thick stirrup handle, and a short, flaring spout with a thick lip. The body is a warm, creamy color, with dramatic red motifs painted around its exterior, portraying a fierce, abstract "underworld lord" as a series of stepped faces. Salinar potters were some of the earliest in Peru and were related to the Chavin and Cupisnique traditions; they invented the modeled-figure spout-and-bridge bottle style that their cultural descendants the Moche would perfect. Size: 5.7" W x 7.95" H (14.5 cm x 20.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-private D. Jeppesen collection, Oregon, USA, acquired before 1982

  • Condition: Small, well done repair/restoration on underside. Neck of spout is also repaired and restored, which is also well done and almost impossible to see. Wear on surface commensurate with age, but overall very nice preservation of motifs, with some light wear to pigment.
