Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Salinar, ca. 500 BCE. An early Salinar polychrome vessel made of kaolin rather than terracotta. Its form is comprised of a globular, near spherical, body with a substantial stirrup and a flared lipped spout rising above. Beautiful panels of stylized zoomorphic motifs - all brandishing open mouths with intimidating teeth/fangs and stylized bodies decorated with sinous, cross, and T-shaped motifs in hues of red, cream, and chocolate brown, while the upper section of the vessel body and the stirrup spout are solid creamy beige, providing an attractive contrast. A stunning example! Size: 4.875" W x 7.2" H (12.4 cm x 18.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
