Native American, North America, Southeastern Arizona, Tonto Basin, Salado culture, ca. 1350-1600 CE and Native American, North America, Southwest, Hohokam culture, ca. 150 CE - 1450 CE. The Salado (Spanish for "salty") peoples migrated to the Salt River in Southeastern Arizona. They resided in the center of three major cultures of the Southwest of the time period: Anasazi to the North, Mogollon to the East and South, and the Hohokam to the West and Southwest. While Salado polychrome pottery was among the most widely traded in the ancient southwest, this example features a monochromatic, corrugated surface. The piece boasts a full, volumetric form and fingernail impressed designs. The term Hohokam comes from the Pima language meaning "those who have vanished" or "all used up". Vessels like this example were created from the earliest days of the Hohokam and continued to be produced throughout their history. Plainwares such as this are simple, elegant, and were technically well produced. Interestingly enough, the Hohokam who had followed the streams of the desert from Mexico to the Southwest did not develop their ceramic skills as a consequence of their migration. They actually came to the Southwest equipped with this knowledge! 6"T x 7-1/2"D at widest and 4-1/2"T x 4-1/2"D at widest Provenance: Ex-Hagen Collection, acquired in the 1940s on private land.
