Central Asia / Russian steppes to Black Sea region, ca. 6th century BCE. A cast bronze axe head, hollow, with a single loop for attachment immediately above its socket opening. People in this bronze-making tradition were part of a cultural milieu of nomadic tribes and metalwork artisans based in trading towns, especially those that studded the shores of the Black Sea. Weapons like this one were signs of prestige, often buried with their owners in mounded tombs, demonstrating their wealth and fighting prowess even beyond the grave.
