Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A charming, mold-made earthenware figure of the god Harpocrates, posed here nude aside from a wreath or tiara crowning his head, and enveloped in liberal remains of white gesso. Standing contrapposto, he leans against a pillar, his right forefinger to his lips, a gesture commonly interpreted by Greek and Roman conquerors as an exhortation of silence and hence ascribed to Harpocrates as the god of secrecy and silence. Drapery falls from the crook of his left arm in which is a cornucopia symbolizing prosperity. In the crook of his left arm, he cradles a cornucopia, symbolizing prosperity and plenty. The figure retains extensive remnants of a white slip, enhancing its historical and artistic significance. Size: 7-1/8"H (18.9 cm.)
