Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A wonderful, mold-formed terracotta figurine of Baubo, the elderly Greek trickster goddess of humor as well as maintaining and protecting the fertility of the land. Baubo presents nude while seated with outstretched legs, her left arm holding one leg aloft and her right hand placed just above her genitalia, and globular breasts drape down above her portly abdomen. Her feminine visage exhibits petite ovoid eyes, a flush nose above thin lips, and a backswept coiffure. A suspension loop on the verso of her head would have allowed the figure to be worn as a pendant. Size: 1.5" W x 1.25" H (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Dr. W. Benson Harer, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2004; ex-Superior Galleries, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired in 1976; ex-collection of Philip Mitry, noted antiquarian, 1930 to 1953, then imported into the United States in 1952; ex-Anglo-American Bookstore, Cairo, Egypt, 1945-1950
