Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A hollow-molded pottery figure of the dwarf deity Bes seated atop an integral throne. The bandy-legged deity presents nude with a lengthy phallus draped between his hooved feet, his muscular arms resting atop the armrests, and a broad tongue extending down between his lion-mane beard. Remains of pink and white pigment visible across the obverse surfaces allude to just how elaborately this figure was decorated at one time. Size: 1.92" L x 1.98" W x 5.09" H (4.9 cm x 5 cm x 12.9 cm)

  • Condition: Loss to top of head along verso as shown. Abrasions and fading to surfaces and remaining pigment, with softening to some finer details, and light earthen deposits, otherwise in excellent condition. Nice preservation to pigment throughout.
