Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A delightful fragment of pottery featuring a black-painted portrait of a bald priest, shown in profile, looking upward and wearing simple robes. Egyptian priests played a major role in society, performing rites and rituals at temples to make offerings to the gods. The more naturalistic style of portrayal here compared to earlier Egyptian art is the result of Classical influence. Size: 1.25" W x 1.5" H (3.2 cm x 3.8 cm); 3.7" H (9.4 cm) on included custom stand.
