Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 4th century CE. A lovely, hollow-molded terracotta effigy of Isis-Aphrodite Anasyromene, a syncretic deity created worshipped primarily during the Roman Period of Egypt. The woman stands nude while proudly displaying her portly thighs and belly, holding her arms outward in a religious manner, bent at the elbow with palms open in a gesture of supplication, and wearing bangles along her ankles and wrists. Her puffy countenance is framed with a coiffure of tightly braided locks as well as a pair of 'beaded' earrings that drape down to her clavicle. Faint remains of pink and orange pigment suggest this figure was at one time embellished with bright hues to accentuate her exposed genitals in a pose of prayer for pregnancy. Size: 7" W x 11.2" H (17.8 cm x 28.4 cm); 12.7" H (32.3 cm) on included custom stand.
