Description:

Egypt, Roman Period, ca. 2nd Century BCE to 1st Century CE.  Finely-rendered ceramic with incised hair and fur, seated erect and alert on integral base, his genitals exposed and his tail curled close to body;  two lug handles on either side with hole atop his head; pierced on each side of neck for suspension.  Nice deep blue overall glaze.  The baboon was sacred to the moon god Thoth and the patron of Egyptian scribes and scholars. This little pot was probably an ink well.   Size:  3-1/4"H. Provenance: Ex-private collection of the artist Philip Pearlstein NYC, NY.
