Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful gold necklace comprised of six 91% gold (equivalent to 20K+) beads shaped like lotus or perhaps papyrus blossoms, fourteen 99% gold (equivalent to 23K+) lozenge shape beads (each comprised of a pair of conjoined conical beads), and twelve 98% gold (equivalent to 23K+) granule beads, all arranged in an elegant, balanced design with a hook and loop closure. Sure to make an elegant statement, replete with impressive artistry in all its luxurious splendor. Size: 16.75" L (42.5 cm); lotus blossom beads measure ~ 1" L x .5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm); longest lozenge shaped beads ~ 1.5" L x .125" W (3.8 cm x 0.3 cm). Weight: 23 grams. In addition to its undeniable beauty, this necklace carries layers of meaning thanks to its flower-shaped beads which likely represent either lotus or papyrus blossoms. Egyptians cultivated lotuses in the marshy land around the Nile; and it was believed that the flower gave them power and strength, perhaps relating to the use of a stylized lotus as a capital motif at the top of columns. Lotuses were also used as funerary adornments - for example, remains of the flower have been found in the tomb of Ramesses II - and as temple offerings and garlands worn by women during rituals. The papyrus plant symbolized Lower Egypt as well as growth, youth, vigor, and renewal.

  • Condition: All beads are ancient save the two smaller spherical beads at the end which show minute crimping/losses. Otherwise beads show slight scuffs and indentations, but are in overall excellent condition. Strung in modern times. Hook and loop are modern and were added to make this piece wearable.
