Description:

Roman, Britain, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A lovely wheel-thrown pottery jar of elegant form with a circular lipped rim, a long neck that widens to a sloped shoulder, and a rounded body, all supported by a narrow annular foot. Painted in black, the ancient vessel is beautifully adorned with a cream-colored geometric pattern along its shoulder and body featuring a band of rhombi, each with a single vertical striation in its center, and a dot on either side of where they connect, all flanked by horizontal rings on either side. Note the silvery iridescence, reminiscent of ancient Rome! Size: 2.875" in diameter x 4.25" H (7.3 cm x 10.8 cm)

According to the previous owner, this remarkable painted jar was found in around 1900 at Cornhill, London, England.

Provenance: private Vindefontaine, France collection, purchased in the early 1970s from an Essex, England, United Kingdom antique shop
